Check the breaker. Make sure the furnace is receiving power.
Reset the furnace. Flip the switch at the furnace off and then on again (the furnace switch looks like a light switch near the furnace). This may reset the furnace temporarily so you should still schedule maintenance/service.
Take a peek at the filter to make sure it’s clean. Replace the filter if needed.
If your thermostat has batteries, you may need to replace them.

Why Is My Furnace Turning On And Then Off Soon After?

If this just started, it could be the result of a dirty coil, dirty air filter, and/or mechanical failure. The most common problem is dust or dirt. These allergens restrict airflow and cause the furnace to overheat and shut down. Check or replace the air filter, and reset the furnace. If it’s a recurring problem, it’s likely the result of an oversized furnace, undersized ductwork, or a mechanical issue.

How Long Does A Furnace Last?

Gas and electric furnaces can last over 15 years if maintained properly. If you don’t know the age or condition of your unit, call Air-Rite Heating & Cooling to schedule a maintenance visit. The technician will thoroughly clean and inspect your furnace and can provide information regarding your system’s status.

What Do I Do If My Furnace Stops Working?

You shouldn’t run your furnace without an air filter. While a furnace can run without a filter, you run the risk of causing harm to the system and/or to yourself. Without a filter, particles enter the furnace and collect inside the chambers. This particle build-up can result in:

Damage to the blower wheel and other components
Lower temperatures

How Do I Check/Replace An Air Filter?

Follow these steps:

Turn off the furnace and thermostat.
Find the air filter. It will be either at the furnace unit or in the ductwork along the wall, ceiling, or floor. Furnace filters are typically 16” x 25”x1” or 20” x 25”x1” but can come in various sizes and widths.
Remove the filter, and hold it up to the light. If light can’t pass through, you need to replace the filter.
Either replace the old filter with a new filter of the same size or re-insert the existing filter that’s been cleaned. Make sure the arrows on the filter point in the direction of the airflow (toward the furnace).
